When planning a holiday in switzerland, do not underestimate the cost of transport. Switzerland has an amazing transport network which is smart, fast, efficient and very very expensive.
My advice would be to decide what you want to do, for how long and where you want to go. Once you have established this, choose a pass that suits you. It is worth every penny as single journeys are insanely expensive. Passes usualy include trains, buses, boats and mountain modes of transport like cable cars.
As we came for the weekend, We wanted to base ourselves in Luzern and travel around from there. Luzern had a special on the Luzern Tell Pass (free 2 day Tell Pass when you book at certain hotels in Luzern) which gives you transport and access to all the highlights in Central switzerland which works out very well.
This pass does not include transport from/to Zurich to Luzern. (€30 per way pp)
My suggestions to see if you staying in Lucerne:
MOUNT RIGI, MOUNT TITLIS AND DO THE GOLDEN PASS
The Golden Pass train starts in Lucerne and ends in Montreux. Towns along the way are Meiringen, Interlaken, Spiez, Zweisimmen and Gstaad.
Lucerne to Interlaken Ost (2hr journey):
This leg of the journey is included FREE in a Tell Pass
The train departs from Lucerne ..through the valleys & gives one amazing views of Crystal clear Lakes surrounded by snow capped mountains, through quiant villages and snow covered mountains that look straight out of a movie. The train climbs the Brünig Pass which has an altitude of 1008 m, then descends and ends in the gateway to the Jungfrau region Interlaken
I would definitely recomend sitting on the right hand side of the train for the best views
MT RIGI:
Take a Boat from Lucerne to Vitznau on Lake Lucerne.
Then Change to the cogwheel train to the top of Mount Rigi
Enjoy lunch with amazing views.
Luckily the Sun came out so enjoyed a Hike down Kulm. Its lovely to walk around so take appropriate shoes and clothing. One can hire stuff and do activities if the weather is good.
For the adventurous traveller Hop into a heated pool at the spa
Then Change to the cable car down to Weggis.
Walk down to the boat(10-15min walk) to return to Lucerne
Fill your empty bottle with free drinking water at the info office at the summit of Mount Rigi
On a budget and need a hot cup of coffee?
There are also vending machines at the info office where you can pick up a cup of steaming hot vanilla latte for just Chf 2.
Carry around coin change (or ask for some change at the info office) as Switzerland is full of vending machines offering cheaper alternatives such as hot drinks and snacks
MOUNT TITLIS:
Take a train from Lucerne to Engelberg (45min)
Take the free bus from engelberg to the mountain.
List of what’s included at Mount Titlis:
Round-trip cable-car travel provided from Engelberg to Mount Titlis, access to the Titlis Cliff Walk which is the highest suspension bridge in Europe, a ride on the Ice Flyer, the Glacier Grotto cave and a selfi with shah rukh khan cutout as Dilwane movie was shot here. One can walk around the summit and enjoy the view
Walk around the 5floors on the summit. There is an ice cream shop, restaurant, chocolate store selling jars of melted lindt(you cant get it at the supermarket only mt rigi (cheaper) n mt titlis))
Take appropruate clothing and shoes as its freezing and the top is covered in a thick layer of deep snow.
For the more adventurous and better dressed there are lots of attractions that are available at an additional charge for all ages. 🗻🚠❄☃🏂
HOTEL:
Situated 10 minutes walk from the Lucerne Station is the Radisson Blu hotel.
Modern and smart hotel rooms and friendly, helpful staff make this the perfect hotel in Lucerne
Till end March 2017 Lucerne is running an excellent special. If you book 2 or more night on a select list of their hotels you receive a 2 day Tell Pass which gives one access to transport around Lucerne and Mt Rigi, Titlus and Pilatus incl the cable cars etc. Which is a huge saving.
