Day Trips from Amsterdam

Day Trips from Amsterdam Round up the girls and head for the road. Amsterdam has an efficient transport network that allows day trips to be affordable, safe, easily accessible and loads of fun! Stores such as Albert Hein, Kruidvat, Hema and Blocker all run at regular intervals train day trip specials. Train journeys to anywhere in the Netherlands go from €13 for a return journey including a cup of coffee at the store. Each special differs so watch out for fine print such as weekends only or  monday to friday  during off peak hours. Specials are found on each companies website or app. Another way to get cheap transport is to regularly check the NS and NS International website and facebook page for their monthly specials. Specials to Belgium (€19 for one way) or France Lille (€22 one way on the thalys was a steal). KEUKENHOF GARDENS Everyone who know me knows that tulips are my favourite flowers. So visiting Keukenhof gardens has always been on my bucket list. Keukenhof

Amsterdam Part 3: Things to do in Amsterdam and most of them are for FREE!!

Things to do in Amsterdam and most of them are for FREE!! As a "professional tourist" (and wife and cook and cleaner) for 8 months in Amsterdam I loved the fact that there are so many things to do in Amsterdam for free. Not the its free but there is a catch kind that I am use to in Africa..genuinely for FREE. NO STRINGS ATTACHED. Finding an amazing crew of friends who are as free as you are is the first step to enjoying all the below activities. But even if you are alone ...GO! I met my fun friends through these activities and we painted Amsterdam red 😉 Sign up to the Meetup app. Meetups introduces you for free with people who have the same intrests and hobbies as you have. Get togethers, workshops and events are then sent to you depending on your intrests. There are many people in Amsterdam who are looking for jobs or here because of their partners. I met one of my amazing friends at a meet up of ladies in the park. It is daunting to put yourself out there on your o

Amsterdam part 2 Halal food and majestic mosques

Halal food and majestic mosques. Food: When in Amsterdam forget Mcdonalds and Burger king and instead try out the vast range of Dutch food available. From Kibbeling (cubes of hot steaming battered fish which will have your tastebuds singing on a cold winters day) and delicious crispy Frites (legendary french fries smothered with creamy mayonnaise or ketchup served in a cone) which is sure to never let you look at the humble french fry the same way again. Both of these can be found in every corner in central Amsterdam. Halal food options: 🍔🌭🍟 Artisani  was our favourite go to spot for delicious thick patty burgers, the perfect seasoned frites and huge scrumptious hotdogs and tart freshly made strawberry lemonade. Similar in concept and taste to Shake shack. Artisani is located on Kinkerstraat (near to Action/Mcdonalds) 🥐🍳 Simit sarayi   also on Kinkerstraat has large range of Turkish light food options and is a delectable halal breakfast option. 🥘 Piri Reis  grand cafè is an a

Amsterdam part 1

Travel tips to an awesome holiday in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is infamous around the world for its stance on marijuana and the red light district but to me it is much more than that. I called Amsterdam home for 8months. It is a vibrant city with 178 nationalities all finding a way to get along even tho most of us are poles apart. Strangers welcomed me into this city with open arms and I have made amazing life long friends. There is a respect for each other without judgement which I loved. To get your bearings around Amsterdam I would start with signing up online with one of the many free walking tours available. They start daily in Dam square Its a great way to enjoy the city from a local who is passionate about where they live and can offer great tips and intresting info that isnt in the guidebooks. They do live on the tips given at the end of the tour. Feel like a local and hire a bicycle from the many bicycle rental stores dotted around Amsterdam and cycle around Amster

Antwerp Belgium. The perfect girls roadtrip

The Ultimate Day trip to Antwerp Belgium Antwerp is a graceful port city on Belgium’s River Scheldt, with history dating to the Middle Ages. As it is a small town one can easily go by train or car (2 hours from Amsterdam) and spend the day walking the cobble stone roads in this alluring little town Stroll through the Grote Markt, a central square in the old town filled with history and beautiful old buildings Visit Het Steen which is a medieval fortress in the old city centre of Antwerp in Belgium. Built after the Viking incursions in the early Middle Ages as the first stone fortress of Antwerp, Het Steen is Antwerp's oldest building and used to be its oldest urban centre. Antwerps shopping district ranges from exclusive designer high end brands to smaller more eclectic shops. It is truly a shoppers paradise in the heart of the old city Dont forget to Indulge in a belgian waffle at the many waffle stores. Decadent Crispy hot waffles loaded with delicious toppings. Milan in a day

Milan is known as one of the fashion capitals of Europe. Walking up to the top of the majestic gothic cathedral the Duomo was one of the highlights of my trip to MILAN. The views from the top of the whole of Milan till the snow capped mountains leave one awe struck There are more statues on this building than any other in the world, 3159 in total. 2245 of these are on the exterior together with 96 gargoyles and 135 spires. It is said that if the statues were placed on top of each other, they would reach a height of about 5,300 meters (3.3 miles). Directly infront of the Duomo is the famous The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II which is one of the world's oldest shopping malls. It is housed within a four-story double arcade and named after Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of the Kingdom of Italy.

Venice..A weekend on the city of water

There is something magical about going back in time. Venecians have maintained and preserved their beautiful islands and one can almost imagine what it must have been liked to row around those narrow canals hundreds of years ago According to Venetian tradition, the couple riding in a gondola should kiss under each bridge and they will stay in love forever.😍 Venice in 24hrs was a wizzz! I loved it There is a beauty that is hard to describe about Venezia Firstly the idea that life revolves around canals takes some getting use to..but once you get the hang of it .. its fun Travel tip: it is more economical to get a 24hr water taxi card for €20 pp from the booth outside the train station and enjoy travelling through the hundreds of canals day and night Alcohol free Tiramisu I discovered Heaven in a cup 😍😍😍😍 @itremercanti_venezia As a purist i Started off with the original tiramisu then had to try the nutella tiramisu  ...words cant fully describe this amazing dessert! Istanbul. How to see Istanbul on a budget

ISTANBUL TRAVEL TIPS: If you are looking for the best spot to get the perfect picture of Istanbul, be sure to climb to the top of the GALATA TOWER. It is best to go a minimum of 1hr before sunset. Cost: 18liras It is a steep climb to get up but gives you stunning 360'views of istanbul. How to get there? Take the tram Till end of line and then take the metro to galata Looking for souveniers? Pop into the Grand bazaar: Prices are sometimes better outside than in grand bazaar.Negotiate alot as the final price is sometimes 1/3 of the first quoted price Transport in Istanbul: If travelling with a large group my advice would be to book Online ones transport from the airport to the hotel .we travelled With Sun tours. (we googled and found them) They were the cheapest we discovered online and very good. Alternatively grab a Taxi (airport to Double tree Laleli was 55lira for 2 people..approx R275) The Subway and Metro are easy to use & clean From the kiosks by trams and me

A weekend in Switzerland are what dreams are made of

When planning a holiday in switzerland, do not underestimate the cost of transport. Switzerland has an amazing transport network which is smart, fast, efficient and very very expensive. My advice would be to decide what you want to do, for how long and where you want to go. Once you have established this, choose a pass that suits you. It is worth every penny as single journeys are insanely expensive. Passes usualy include trains, buses, boats and mountain modes of transport like cable cars. As we came for the weekend, We wanted to base ourselves in Luzern and travel around from there. Luzern had a special on the Luzern Tell Pass (free 2 day Tell Pass when you book at certain hotels in Luzern) which gives you transport and access to all the highlights in Central switzerland which works out very well. This pass does not include transport from/to Zurich  to Luzern. (€30 per way pp) My suggestions to see if you staying in Lucerne: MOUNT RIGI, MOUNT TITLIS AND DO THE GOLDEN PASS The G

Prague

Old town Prague is a beautiful cobble  stoned area filled with charm and beautifuly maintained buildings. Stroll through the  streets and you can easily feel what life would have been in the 1800s. A river cruise on the Vltava river is a memorable experience and an ideal way of seeing the beautiful, historical Prague from a different perspective. There are many boat tour operators all lined up next to each other and most leave on the hour. Food: There are lots and lots of cafès and coffee shops everywhere. People love to sit outside in good weather and chill and chat over a coffee and cake. Kürtőskalács ( transliterated kurtosh kalach) is a spit cake specific to Hungarian-speaking regions in Romania or called chimney cake Kürtőskalács is made from sweet, yeast dough (raised dough), of which a strip of dough is spun and then wrapped around a truncated cone–shaped baking spit, and rolled in granulated sugar. It is roasted over charcoal while basted with melted butter, until its surf

24 hours in Vienna

Tips for travelling in Vienna Austria: Always carry change Most places (including train stations charge 0.50 cents to use the toilets) If doing many european countries try to avoid Vienna on a sunday as nothing is open on a sunday besides restaurants, museums and tours. All stores are closed! Purchase a 24 or 48hr travel pass as it is very cost effective compared to single tickets and gives one access to the underground metros, trams and buses. Dont forget to punch in at the first point when you start using the transport system. 24hrs is counted from the first journey and NOT the time you purchase a ticket. When you get tired of walking sit on tram 1 or 2 and enjoy the sights of the ringstrasse. If you want to hear the history behind these beautiful buildings then go on the non stop 30min tram ride from schwedenplatz which runs from 10am to 5.30pm with info given over headsets in several languages. This tram is not included in the 24hr pass. In winter (till 12th March) there is
