24 hours in Vienna

Tips for travelling in Vienna Austria:

Always carry change
Most places (including train stations charge 0.50 cents to use the toilets)

If doing many european countries try to avoid Vienna on a sunday as nothing is open on a sunday besides restaurants, museums and tours. All stores are closed!

Purchase a 24 or 48hr travel pass as it is very cost effective compared to single tickets and gives one access to the underground metros, trams and buses. Dont forget to punch in at the first point when you start using the transport system. 24hrs is counted from the first journey and NOT the time you purchase a ticket.
When you get tired of walking sit on tram 1 or 2 and enjoy the sights of the ringstrasse.

If you want to hear the history behind these beautiful buildings then go on the non stop 30min tram ride from schwedenplatz which runs from 10am to 5.30pm with info given over headsets in several languages. This tram is not included in the 24hr pass.

In winter (till 12th March) there is a winter wonderland outside Vienna Rathausplatz.
The enchanting illuminated façade of Viennas City Hall forms the fairytale backdrop for Vienna Ice World.
It is an 8,500 m² ice landscape with mazes and diversions that delivers entertaining winter enjoyment for skating fans surrounded by  winter pop up food stores that sell hot delicious winter fattening goodies.

Art in many subways:
Example the "Nature in the Making"  by Anton Lehmden at the U3 station Volkstheater.
Four million mosaic stones were placed over an area of 360 m².
200 shades of colour were used

Food:
There are many halaal restaurants as 8% of the population is muslim.
Many doner kebaab places sell alcohol becareful.

My recomendations:

**There is a Halaal Türkis restaurant at the main Vienna station hauftbahnhof where the international trains end their journey and leave from. The pizzas were nice and can also be boxed for taking on the train with you for a long journey.

** CURRY N MASALA is Located at Landstraßer Hauptstraße 2, 1030 Wien and open daily 11.30am till 10pm

No alcohol is served on the premises

We loved the chicken tikka masala and chilli naan (ask to upgrade your standard naan that is served with the curry)

It is easy to walk pass and miss the place as they are located inside an arcade and do not have great signage on the outside. It is opposite the Wien Mitte main station. Near the hilton and next to the arcade with the Cinemas sign. There is a doner kebab place at the entrance to their arcade.

Hotels:

We stayed at NH Wien Zentrum. They were apartment style rooms. Ours had a small lounge with a tv and sleeper couch, a desk and kitchenette. A seperate bedroom with a tv.

The rooms were neat and modern and clean.
Lovely amenities with bathrobes and slippers and nice products.

The staff were very helpful, warm and friendly and realy made an effort.

My only gripe was that it has central heating or cooling. So one is not able to control the temperature of your own room. As it is winter they had the heater on throughout the hotel and the room was stuffy unless you opened a window at all times.

The hotel is infront of the U3 Zieglergasse but exit at Andreasgasse. It is opposite Mcdonalds amd next to H&M. The street is a lovely pedestrian street with department stores and a lovely atmosphere. All stores are closed on a sunday!

Amsterdam Part 3: Things to do in Amsterdam and most of them are for FREE!!

Things to do in Amsterdam and most of them are for FREE!! As a "professional tourist" (and wife and cook and cleaner) for 8 months in Amsterdam I loved the fact that there are so many things to do in Amsterdam for free. Not the its free but there is a catch kind that I am use to in Africa..genuinely for FREE. NO STRINGS ATTACHED. Finding an amazing crew of friends who are as free as you are is the first step to enjoying all the below activities. But even if you are alone ...GO! I met my fun friends through these activities and we painted Amsterdam red 😉 Sign up to the Meetup app. Meetups introduces you for free with people who have the same intrests and hobbies as you have. Get togethers, workshops and events are then sent to you depending on your intrests. There are many people in Amsterdam who are looking for jobs or here because of their partners. I met one of my amazing friends at a meet up of ladies in the park. It is daunting to put yourself out there on your o

Day Trips from Amsterdam

Day Trips from Amsterdam Round up the girls and head for the road. Amsterdam has an efficient transport network that allows day trips to be affordable, safe, easily accessible and loads of fun! Stores such as Albert Hein, Kruidvat, Hema and Blocker all run at regular intervals train day trip specials. Train journeys to anywhere in the Netherlands go from €13 for a return journey including a cup of coffee at the store. Each special differs so watch out for fine print such as weekends only or  monday to friday  during off peak hours. Specials are found on each companies website or app. Another way to get cheap transport is to regularly check the NS and NS International website and facebook page for their monthly specials. Specials to Belgium (€19 for one way) or France Lille (€22 one way on the thalys was a steal). KEUKENHOF GARDENS Everyone who know me knows that tulips are my favourite flowers. So visiting Keukenhof gardens has always been on my bucket list. Keukenhof

Amsterdam part 2 Halal food and majestic mosques

Halal food and majestic mosques. Food: When in Amsterdam forget Mcdonalds and Burger king and instead try out the vast range of Dutch food available. From Kibbeling (cubes of hot steaming battered fish which will have your tastebuds singing on a cold winters day) and delicious crispy Frites (legendary french fries smothered with creamy mayonnaise or ketchup served in a cone) which is sure to never let you look at the humble french fry the same way again. Both of these can be found in every corner in central Amsterdam. Halal food options: 🍔🌭🍟 Artisani  was our favourite go to spot for delicious thick patty burgers, the perfect seasoned frites and huge scrumptious hotdogs and tart freshly made strawberry lemonade. Similar in concept and taste to Shake shack. Artisani is located on Kinkerstraat (near to Action/Mcdonalds) 🥐🍳 Simit sarayi   also on Kinkerstraat has large range of Turkish light food options and is a delectable halal breakfast option. 🥘 Piri Reis  grand cafè is an a
